My research has focused on the Physalideae tribe, which has the highest generic-level diversity of any tribe in Solanaceae, and comprises numerous species with the inflated calyx syndrome (ICS). The main goal is to reconstruct the evolutionary and biogeographic history of the Physalideae tribe using fossils, morphology, and museum genomics. Our specific objectives are: (i) to infer and calibrate a total-evidence phylogeny for the Physalideae including fossils and extant taxa; (ii) to analyse whether phenotypic changes in the fruiting calyx inflation affected diversification rates within the tribe;(iii) to infer the biogeographic history of Physalideae using the calibrated phylogeny and test the influence of the inflated fruiting calyx on the macroevolutionary dispersal rate; and (vi) to propose the taxonomical changes needed for a classification based on monophyletic groups.
